Q: "Tell us about yourself: your family, friends, interests, and hobbies."
A: "I started at Norwich in 2008 as a member of its Corps of Cadets and graduated in 2012 with a BA in Political Science. After graduation, I was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps. I started as an Air Support Control Officer, planning and supporting Close Air Support Missions and Casualty Evacuations.
I have since hung up my uniform for the suit-and-tie of the civilian world. I live and work in Newport, Rhode Island, where I grew up. I serve as the Director of IT and Security for a defense startup supporting the Navy and hold the certs CYSA+ and SecurityX (fmr. CASP+). My older brother is an active Marine First Sargent, and I am currently engaged and set to get married on August 2nd in Newport, RI."

Q: "Describe your professional background prior to enrolling, what motivated you to pursue this degree, and your long-term career goals."
A: "I returned to Norwich after completing my time on active duty. I knew cybersecurity was a growing and evolving field, and computers had always interested me. So, I enrolled in Norwich’s online program to achieve my second bachelor’s degree in Information Assurance, graduating in 2023.
After gaining professional traction working as an Information Security Officer and Information Security Manager for nearly five years in the cybersecurity defense industry, I decided it was time to fully commit to the field. I chose to pursue my master’s degree at the same institution that had set me up for success so many times."
Q: "How have you applied what you learned in your role, and how has this degree impacted your career growth or direction?"
A: "The knowledge and skills I gained through the program have been directly applicable to my work in the defense cybersecurity industry, particularly in compliance, risk management, and enterprise security architecture. As I progressed through the curriculum, I was able to immediately implement frameworks and best practices in my role—whether it was strengthening CMMC compliance programs, architecting secure network environments, or improving incident response protocols.
In terms of career growth, the degree has been instrumental in my progression from hands-on security roles to leadership positions, including my current role as Director of IT and Security. It provided both the technical depth and the professional credibility necessary to take on greater responsibility in the defense industrial base, where certifications and formal education carry significant weight."
Q: "What will stay with you most from your Norwich experience, and what advice would you give to prospective students?"
A: "What will stay with me most now as a three-time Norwich student is how the institution has consistently challenged me to grow beyond my comfort zone. Norwich changed who I was and helped lay the groundwork for the person, officer, and professional I have become. When I first arrived as a cadet in 2008, I had a dream to become a Marine officer like my grandfather and great-grandfather, and Norwich was the path to get there. The institution taught me to push harder than I thought possible, accept criticism constructively, and lead with purpose. Returning twice more for a second bachelor's degree in Information Assurance and now for my master's degree in Cybersecurity reaffirmed that Norwich's value is not just academic; it is transformational.
My advice: be ready to be uncomfortable. Norwich will challenge you as a person, not just as a student, and that is exactly what makes it valuable. Leadership, as Norwich taught me, is about owning your situation, seeing the potential in the people and resources around you, and believing in a vision before anyone else can see it."
Q: "Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experiences at Norwich or the impact of Norwich on your life?"
A: "When I first arrived as a Rook in 2008, I had a dream: to become a Marine officer like my grandfather and great-grandfather before me, and I saw Norwich as the path to get there. That foundation has carried through every phase of my career, from active duty to the defense industry."
Q: "Why did you choose Norwich University Online? What influenced your decision to pursue an online program, and which aspects of the online learning experience proved most beneficial to you?"
A: "I returned to Norwich after active duty because of the strong foundation the university had already given me. I was drawn to cybersecurity as a fast-growing field with a long-standing personal interest in technology. Norwich's online program gave me the flexibility to transition into this new career while balancing full-time professional responsibilities.
The online format allowed me to immediately apply what I was learning in real-world settings, reinforcing academic concepts through hands-on work as an Information Security Officer and later as an Information Security Manager. After nearly five years of professional momentum, I chose to further invest in my development by pursuing a master's degree at the same institution that had consistently set me up for success."
Q: "What were your expectations before starting the program? How did your experience compare, and what aspects stood out most to you?"
A: "I began the program expecting a solid technical foundation and the flexibility needed to balance full-time work. Given my prior experience with Norwich, I anticipated a structured and disciplined environment, though I was uncertain how effectively an online program would replicate that rigor.
In practice, the program exceeded my expectations. The coursework was rigorous and directly relevant to real-world cybersecurity challenges. I was able to apply concepts from class to my role in the defense industry almost immediately. One of the most impactful aspects was the caliber and diversity of my peers engaging with professionals from different sectors and backgrounds, enriching discussions and broadening my understanding of cybersecurity across industries."
