Information Warfare: A Comprehensive Program Overview
Norwich University’s Graduate Certificate in Information Warfare is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of information warfare as it occurs in the global arena. The curriculum will enable students to:
1. Define and Compare Information Warfare:
Students will examine the various frameworks through which different nations conceptualize and implement information warfare. This includes understanding how cultural, political, and technological factors shape each country's approach, thereby allowing for a nuanced comparison of strategies employed by countries like the United States, Russia, China, and others.
2. Identify and Explain Fundamental Principles:
The program will emphasize the core principles that underpin information warfare, including psychological operations, propaganda, disinformation, and cyber operations. Students will learn to identify how these principles play out in both state and non-state actors’ tactics to achieve political, military, or social objectives.
3. Analyze Historical Examples:
Students will analyze notable historical instances of information warfare, examining case studies such as the Cold War, the Gulf War, and recent electoral interference. By evaluating the outcomes of these conflicts, students will gain insights into the effectiveness of various strategies and the lessons learned from past engagements.
4. Evaluate Current Threats:
The program will focus on current information warfare threats facing the United States, particularly those emanating from nations like Russia, China, and Iran and violent extremist organizations. Students will be tasked with assessing the motivations behind these threats and their potential impact on national security and public opinion.
5. Assess Cyber-Enabled Capabilities:
There will be a thorough exploration of how advancements in cyber technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, have transformed the landscape of information warfare. Students will evaluate how these capabilities can amplify both offensive and defensive strategies and examine case studies of recent incidents involving cyber-enabled manipulation and misinformation.
6. Develop Counter Strategies:
Finally, students will synthesize their knowledge to develop multidisciplinary strategies aimed at countering information warfare threats. This will involve collaborative projects that integrate insights from fields such as political science, cybersecurity, psychology, and communications, aiming to create holistic approaches to defending against and mitigating the effects of information warfare.
