7 Service Member Traits that Shine in an Online Learning Environment

Throughout a service member’s career, there are several skills and traits they develop to ensure their success. When combined with the foundation established though the military’s shared values, a skilled service member is a force to be reckoned with.

Leadership
A service member is trained and developed to lead. Group assignments or mentorship roles come naturally, enhancing not only their own educational experience but also the experience of those around them.

Teamwork
Although leadership is a key element of a service member’s skillset, they embrace followership when appropriate. This makes a service member a key contributing member to a team in any role.

Perseverance
Try, and then try again. Service members simply do not quit. The Army’s Warrior Ethos starts with “I will never quit” and its sentiment is echoed in one way or another across the DoD. While others may stray from or abandon their educational journey, a service member will see it to completion.

Discipline
This is what drives service members to maintain the standards. It is what allows the military to function, and it is what guarantees a service member’s success in an online degree. They have the discipline to do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done.

Flexibility
Service members rock with the punches. They are used to ever changing and adapting environments.

Time Management
Service members know how to prioritize as well as divide and conquer. When undertaking an online degree, learners need to plan for and meet multiple deadlines to avoid falling behind.

Communication
Service members are stellar communicators. Be it written, verbal, or hand and arm signals, they get the message across. Service members exercise these skills in discussion boards, pre-recorded lectures, and other forms of asynchronous learning.

The application of these skills and countless others that are second nature to you set you ahead of the pack in the online learning environment. It is important that you find the right seat at the right institution.

Challenges

For many, a bad grade in college is the first time they have truly failed as an adult — Not so for a service member. Service members grow through failure, each occasion is a lesson or learning experience. Your service has prepared you to relentlessly continue forward in the face of adversity. Norwich mirrors this with their motto “I will try”.  You will feel at home here in an environment filled with new challenges to overcome.
