Jeffrey Shaw

Jeff Shaw is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Policy at the Naval War College.

He is the author of a number of books and journal articles covering topics from philosophy to national security. His 3-volume Wars of Religion: An Encyclopedia of Faith and Conflict was published by ABC CLIO in 2016. Other books include Illusions of Freedom (Wipf and Stock, 2014) Jacques Ellul on Violence, Terrorism and War (Pickwick, 2016), and Bound for the Coast of Africa: The Journal of the Brig Hiram (Stone Tower, 2016). He was co-editor of the Potomac Institute of Policy Studies’ 2013 thematic edition of the online journal Synesis entitled “Historical and Social Constructs of Technology: Contexts and Value for the Contemporary World,” and his article “Putting the Cooperative Maritime Strategy to Work: A Wargaming Perspective” appeared in Joint Force Quarterly 72.  Another article, "An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Study of Technology" appeared in Common Ground Publishing’s The International Journal of Critical Cultural Studies. Book chapters include “The Ogaden War” in Peripheries of the Cold War by Verlag Koningshausen and Neumann in Wurzburg, Germany, and “War and Technology: Precision, Nanotechnology, and Globalization “ in The Means to Kill, from McFarland. He is curretly writing a book on the Imjin War for Helion and Company, as well as another book for ABC CLIO entitled Voices of the French Revolution. He is a member of the Heterodox Academy, and a member of the Board of Directors at the Seamen's Church Institute in Newport RI, as well as a member of the Boston Global Forum. He holds a PhD in Humanities from Salve Regina University and an MA in Military History from the American Military University and in National Security Studies from the Air Command and Staff College. He retired from the USAF in 2011, where he served as the deputy chief of the Foreign Liaison Division and the Japan Country Director for the Secretary of the Air Force/International Affairs.
