During my clinical experience, I was able to immediately apply what I learned in the classroom while talking with patients about their mental health issues.

Q: “Tell us about yourself.”
A: “I live in Colorado with my wife (Adrienne) and my two kids (Benjamin and Jeremiah). We enjoy outdoor recreation, including hiking, camping, skiing, and rafting. When I was 22, I joined the US Navy. I was a Phalanx (CIWS) weapon system technician/operator on board USS Cowpens CG 63 for 5 years. After separation from the Navy, I worked on a master’s degree in management. After completing the MS I started all over by obtaining my EMT, paramedic, RN, BSN, and now completing my MSN Nurse Practitioner degree.

Q: “What was your motivation for pursuing your degree?”
A: “While I did enjoy working as a paramedic, I decided I needed more pay and a more flexible schedule. After completing my BSN, I pursued the PMHNP MSN. I am in the field to help people, so I am very happy that I can still help patients with mental health issues while maintaining the flexibility I need for my family. When I complete my degree, I will start a private practice offering telehealth services to patients in Colorado needing mental health psychiatric services.”

Q: “Why did you choose Norwich?”
A: “I decided to attend Norwich because I liked the schedule for the MSN programs. I also love the Norwich military history. During my program, Norwich reduced tuition for first responders.”

Q: “Prior to beginning your courses, what were some of your expectations for an online degree program?”
A: “I expected all the aspects of an online program. It is all about personal time management. I like that it is my schedule, and I can complete the assignments within a flexible timeline. I work full time, and outside work and school, I spend all my time with my wife and kids, so flexibility is necessary. While in the Navy, I completed my first bachelor's degree in finance at sea. I am all about flexibility, so I had no apprehensions about attending online school.”

Q: “What has been your biggest personal or professional success since starting your degree?”
A: “I enjoy helping people with their medical and mental health issues. Norwich provided the program for me to expand my career in a direction that allows me to do what I enjoy.”

Q: “Please tell us about a time in which you could put your knowledge gained in the classroom to work immediately at your job.”
A: “During my clinical experience, I was able to immediately apply what I learned in the classroom while talking with patients about their mental health issues.”

Q: “What aspects of your Norwich experience will you carry most strongly with you?”
A: “I enjoy the fact that my education institute has a strong military history. The clinicals I participated in as part of the PMHNP program will always be part of my psychiatry foundation.”

Q: “What advice would you give future students enrolling in one of Norwich's online programs?”
A: “With good time management, a quality support system, and perseverance, all goals can be achieved.”
