The New England Public Works Institute is an online course of study in leadership and management best practices. It provides both new and experienced supervisors and managers the skills needed to manage and lead in a constantly evolving public works environment. Emphasis is placed on collaboration, decision-making, writing and critical thinking. Students from all levels of educational backgrounds are accommodated.

Successful completion of the course is an important part of the American Public Works Association (APWA) Level 1 Public Works Supervisor and Level 2 Public Works Manager credentialing process in the Donald C. Stone (DCS) Center for Excellence.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate how to use resources available through the internet to create new ways of improving public works operations;
  2. Discuss how to collaborate with the community and the private sector;
  3. Identify how to enhance operational efficiencies by the creative use of structure and processes;
  4. Demonstrate the links between integrity, trust, transparency and effective leadership;
  5. Articulate the role of the leader in taking responsibility for creating a long-term strategy;
  6. Exhibit the use of outcome-based budgeting;
  7. Demonstrate how to manage communications through social media;
  8. Demonstrate how to create a RFP (request for proposal) for your organization;
  9. Demonstrate how you can improve organizational performance with better information systems;
  10. Develop a strategy to achieve your goal of a learning organization through personal mastery;
  11. Use critical analysis and goal identification to enhance decision-making;
  12. Articulate the connection between self-awareness, empathy and self-awareness and transformative leadership.
