Thomas Garrett was recently awarded Mongolia’s Medal of Friendship, one of the highest civilian awards Mongolia bestows upon foreign citizens. The award was conferred upon Garrett by order of Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj and presented by Mongolian Ambassador to the United States, Bulgaa Altangerel at the Embassy of Mongolia in Washington, D.C.; the medal was awarded in recognition of Garrett’s efforts to promote Mongolia’s democratic development.
Garrett has worked for the International Republican Institute (IRI) for over 22 years, having served as Vice President for Programs since September 2009. During his tenure with IRI, Garrett has acted as regional program director for the Middle East and North Africa, resident country director in Indonesia, Belarus and Moldova, and resident advisor to Parliament in Mongolia. He has performed assessments for program training and election observation in 23 countries in Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa and the former Soviet Union. Prior to joining IRI, Garrett worked as a professional campaign consultant in Texas and Oklahoma and was a (George H.W.) Bush Administration appointee to the U.S. Department of the Interior.
