Francisco Leija, Norwich University Master of Arts in Diplomacy 2006 alumnus, has been appointed to the 2014-2015 Class of White House Fellows. From the hundreds of applicants this year, Leija is one of 15 fellows selected by the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships for their professional achievement, evidence of leadership potential, and a proven commitment to public service.
Leija’s professional career began as a private in the Army with only a high school degree. He has since progressed to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army and holds two master’s degrees, an M.A. in Diplomacy from Norwich and an M.A. in Strategy Formulation from the School of Advanced Military Studies. He has been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan, served as an assistant professor at West Point, been an exchange officer with the U.S. Marine Corps, and worked with the Joint Staff. Leija’s military certifications include Airborne, Ranger, Rappel Master and multiple Mountaineering courses. Lieja has also been awarded two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. He has extensive volunteer experience with the Boys and Girls Club and the Wounded Warrior Program, and is also a competitive runner and cyclist.
