David W. Carter’s new military history book, set to be released this fall, is already receiving good press.
The historical project, entitled Mayday Over Wichita: The Worst Military Aviation Disaster in Kansas History. Mayday Over Wichita, tells the story of a cold Saturday morning back on January 16, 1965, when an Air Force KC-135 tanker carrying 31,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into a congested African-American neighborhood in Wichita, Kansas. When the fire and destruction finally subsided, 47 people (mostly African-American children) were dead or injured, homes were completely obliterated, and numerous families were now splintered.
In the book, Carter provides new evidence for why the plane crashed, while examining the community’s response to the disaster in the context of Kansas’s role in the Civil Rights Movement.
A military historian and educator in Topeka, Kansas, Carter attributes his quest to become a published historical author to the skills he obtained in the military history master’s program at Norwich. “I believe it was the perfect learning environment for aspiring historians and the best decision I could have made in my academic pursuits,” says Carter. “My instructors and former classmates have now become some of my biggest supporters and I’m grateful for the alumni network.”
