Chief Warrant Officer 4, Bernard M. Bunny, retired from the U.S. Navy's Civil Engineering Corps after he returned from Afghanistan. Bunny became an estimator for Ferguson Electric Construction Company in Buffalo, NY. His zest for public service, however, did not end when Bunny secured a civilian job.
Struck by how little most people understood about the infrastructure around them, Bunny came up with a novel idea. His idea was to bring industry professionals to high school students to offer them lectures, field trips and other hands-on learning opportunities regarding utility and industrial infrastructure. His goal was to make the experience "both valuable and fun," according to Bunny.
Bunny approached the Western New York Maritime Charter School, a four-year public high school chartered by the New York Board of Regents in 2004, about the opportunity. One year later the course was born and industry professionals taught classes on water purification and distribution systems, sewage treatment, electric power production and distribution, along with electrical construction and traffic signal systems.
Each of the industry professionals also spent time showcasing career paths within their corner of the industry, and described how a high school student could prepare for them. Based on feedback from the school, its students and presenters, this experiential learning opportunity was a tremendous success.
