Damian Cummings

Master of Civil Engineering
, Class of 2013
It’s not just the content of the program that makes Norwich unique, but also the dedication of the instructors and administration. There was always someone available to help with whatever concerns or questions I had. Although we studied in a virtual classroom, I didn’t feel distant or alone in the program.
Damian Cummings, Class of 2013
Master of Civil Engineering

Q: “Tell us about you as a person, Damian."
A: “I live in Montego Bay, Jamaica, with my wife and three children. I previously earned a bachelor’s degree in construction management at the University of Technology, Jamaica, a diploma in architectural technology from the Montego Bay Community College, and a Bachelor of Theology from Parkersburg Bible College. I like watching all types of sports, except for boxing, wrestling, and horse racing. I enjoy spending time with my family and reading the Bible.”

Q: “What is your current employer?”
A: “I presently work with Jose Cartellone Constucciones Civiles, which is a civil engineering company originating and having their headquarters in Argentina. I’ve worked with this company for the past 11 years, chiefly as an environmental and underground utilities manager, among other duties mostly on road construction projects. Before joining Jose Cartellone, I was employed at Tank Weld Ltd, Jamaica, in the capacity of site engineer on infrastructure development projects.”

Q: “What was your motivation for pursuing this degree?”
A: “Over the last five years, my responsibilities in my organization have been increasing and I thought I needed the tools and knowledge necessary to undertake each new challenge. Also, I wanted to be able to position myself to move up the organization’s hierarchy and become more marketable in the job market.”

Q: “Why did you choose Norwich and how did you learn about it?”
A: “I was looking for a university which offered a degree that would allow me to continue working while I studied. I also sought an institution that was well-established and would offer a challenge. I learned about Norwich through a Google search. The truth is, I was a little skeptical of enrolling in an online program; however, after reading what Norwich had to offer and the structure and history that they had, I decided it was a step worth taking.”

Q: “What makes Norwich unique?”
A: “It’s not just the content of the program that makes Norwich unique, but also the dedication of the instructors and administration. There was always someone available to help with whatever concerns or questions I had. Although we studied in a virtual classroom, I didn’t feel distant or alone in the program. Being in the same cohort group throughout the program allowed us to develop great bonds and work comfortably together throughout the program.”

Q: “How have you grown personally or professional as a result of your education?”
A: “I have been given greater responsibility at work since I enrolled in the program and I am better able to participate in more discussions and have more positive input in decision-making processes. The program broadened my understanding of various concepts and my ability to reason and make quick, but thought-out decisions.”

Q: “Please tell us about any examples where you were able to put your knowledge to work immediately at your job.”
A: “I am reviewing a remediation plan and in a short time will be carrying out remediation works on a construction site that has contaminated soils. My knowledge of the flow of contaminants in aquifers will aid me greatly in this area.”

Q: “What aspects of your Norwich experience will you carry most strongly with you?”
A: “I enrolled in the program in order to earn a degree and now, reaching the end, I feel that it is more than just the degree. I feel like I’m part of a great legacy and from now on am part of the Norwich University family. The Norwich motto says, “Expect Challenge, Achieve Distinction,” and I believe I was truly challenged in the program; however, the university had the tools to help us excel. During the program, I learned how to better organize, prioritize, and manage my time and these qualities are ones I will carry with me as I go forward.”
