Peace is the Mission; Strategy is the Means

Now more than ever, the global geopolitical landscape is undergoing a rapid and remarkable evolution. In order for America to anticipate and influence future events, both domestic and international, it is necessary for its military personnel to approach tactical and strategic planning from a proactive rather than reactive point of view.

Norwich University’s online Master of Arts in Strategic Studies program is designed for current and former military personnel of all uniformed branches. The Master of Arts in Strategic Studies program is intended to expand upon students’ educational and military experience with challenging graduate-level courses that focus on ends, ways and means as well as the challenges of nesting supporting objectives. The coursework equips students with the skill sets and knowledge to help them become more qualified to undertake the evolving mission of the United States military, as well as to collaborate with agencies outside the Department of Defense on matters of national security.

Under the tutelage of skilled faculty—including retired military officers and defense strategy experts—students will explore the unique relationship between politics and national power, from the application of democracy to the threatened use of military action and beyond. Additionally, graduates of the program can gain a comprehensive knowledge of major trends in military affairs and civil-military relations, as well as Western and Asian theoretical approaches to strategic thought and how these may be applicable to contemporary concepts in security. The program culminates in a capstone project designed to allow students to synthesize the principles and objectives of the program in order to apply the theoretical and methodological skills gained to real-world affairs.
