The Changing IT Security Job Market

Court documents say the hacker gained access to the server by exploiting a vulnerability in its firewall.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data supports the uptick in need for qualified professionals; the BLS projects employment of information security analysts to grow by 28% between 2016 and 2026, which is much faster than the projected growth trajectory for the average occupation.

In the Cyberthreat Defense Report, 84% of surveyed organizations noted a shortage of qualified security talent. The report also found that recruitment for some positions, including IT security administrators, IT security architects, and engineers, was especially challenging due to the expertise level of candidates.

As of July 2019, PayScale reports that the average annual salary for an IT security manager is $104,854, although the highest 10% earn more than $146,000.

Cybersecurity Engineer

Cybersecurity engineers plan and executive measures designed to protect computers and IT networks. In addition to monitoring networks for security breaches, they remain up to date on the latest IT security trends and recommend security enhancements to senior management. The BLS expects employment for information security analysts, including cybersecurity engineers, to grow by 28% between 2016 and 2026, or about four times as fast as the projected average for all occupations. As of July 2019, PayScale reports that the average annual salary for a cybersecurity engineer is $95,027, although the highest 10% earn more than $136,000.

Chief Information Security Officer

Chief Information Security Officers (CISO) establish and maintain strategies that safeguard IT security. They stay ahead of new types of attacks, analyze real-time threats, and manage the company’s firewall. The BLS expects employment for computer and information systems managers, which includes CISOs, to grow by 12% between 2016 and 2026, which is faster than the projected average for all occupations. As of July 2019, PayScale reports that the average annual salary for a CISO is $158,062, although the highest 10% earn more than $222,000.
